Car Seat Transition Checklist
A simple guide to knowing when your child is ready for the next car seat stage
From Infant Seat to Convertible Seat
Transition when any of the following are true:
☐Child reaches maximum weight limit (per your infant seat manual)
☐Child’s head is less than 1″ from the top of the seat shell or the head restraint when full extended
☐You’re looking for longer-term seating that stays installed in the car
Rear-Facing to Forward-Facing (Convertible Seat)
Stay rear-facing as long as possible. Transition when:
☐Child has outgrown their car seat in height OR weight limits, when installed in the rear-facing mode
☐Legs touching seat back? That’s ok! Height alone is not a reason to switch
☐Child’s head is less than 1″ from the top of the seat shell or the head restraint when fully extended
Forward-Facing (Convertible Seat) to Booster Mode
Stay in a five-point harness as long as possible. Transition when:
☐Child reaches maximum weight OR height limits for their car seat
☐Harness slots are below the shoulders when installed forward-facing
☐Can sit unassisted and stay upright for the whole ride
☐Is mature enough to keep seatbelt properly positioned
☐Ready for booster, not just physically, but behaviorally
Booster to Vehicle Seat Belt Only
Most kids need a booster until 10–12 years old! Use the 5-Step Fit Test to see if your child is ready:
☐Back is flat against vehicle seat
☐Knees bend naturally at seat edge
☐Lap belt fits across upper thighs/lower hips, not stomach
☐Shoulder belt sits across chest and shoulder, not neck
☐Can stay seated properly for the entire ride
Pro Tip: Always refer to your car seat manual and vehicle manual as your primary guides!
