In 2006, Bob and Lauren Monahan, parents themselves, found that the perfect stroller for their needs was nowhere to be found. The market was saturated with products that either were mass-produced and cheaply made or luxurious but complicated with long, convoluted instructions. Inspired by their two-year-old daughter, Makena, who would say “uppa, uppa” when she wanted to be lifted into their arms, they named their company UPPAbaby. The products, however, were inspired by the Monahans’ firsthand understanding of what parents truly need—ease of use, good customer service, and a simple setup and breakdown to help parents’ lives move seamlessly. They sold their first strollers in September 2006 and had sold their 1,000th by 2007. Today, UPPAbaby has Hub Service Centers and Showrooms in three US cities, Toronto, and even a MiniHub in the United Kingdom. Its products are sold in over 50 countries.
It all started with UPPAbaby’s first model, the Vista, a high-performance stroller system that is soon debuting its third iteration almost 20 years later! Next came our G-Luxe stroller and our Piggyback ride along board, an accessory that allows an independent toddler to stand for their stroll. By 2011, we had moved to a bigger office space, updated our logo to the classic design we use today, launched another stroller model (the Cruz), and donated more than $200,000 worth of gear to families in need nationwide via our UPPAbaby Gives Back® program on the TODAY Show.
Through our smart and user-friendly designs, cutting-edge technology, and the press from some very recognizable mamas like Brooke Shields and Sarah Jessica Parker pushing our strollers around town, UPPAbaby continued to grow. 2013 saw the launch of our original Mesa Infant Car Seat, which had the industry’s first SmartSecure System, received a 5-star rating from NHSTA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and Best Pick from Consumer Reports, and also happened to be featured on the hit series Modern Family! We were a rapidly growing business serving growing families, and we constantly innovated to meet them where they were at. We launched our revolutionary double Vista stroller the following year, with a new system that allowed parents to push up to three children at the same time by adding a RumbleSeat, Mesa, or Bassinet. It went on to be selected as a JPMA Innovation Award Winner.
Our modern approach led us to launch a Live Chat through our Customer Experience Department in 2015, making it easier for parents to connect with us. As the milestones continued to rack up–50,000 fans on Facebook, 18 years in business, $1M in product donations, and a partnership with Good+ Foundation and Room to Grow that brought essential gear to families in need from coast to coast–we never lost focus of our original mission. We continue to listen to what parents want and need, expanding our line of strollers to include a jogging stroller (Ridge) and a travel stroller (Minu). Our growing In-Home category provides more high-quality choices than ever before, from the Remi playard to the Mira Bouncer and Ciro Highchair. One of the best parts of every UPPAbaby product is the customizable details–our wide variety of accessories round out every experience with comfort and convenience for both parents and children.
In 2024, we’ve already debuted the Aria, Alta V2, Mira, Ciro, and are eagerly anticipating our next big launches, the new Vista V3 and Rove Convertible Car Seat! What began as a tiny operation in a shoe factory building in Rockland, Massachusetts, now has a team of more than 300 people worldwide.
