The base is not required to achieve a safe and secure install. The lap belt routes through the guides on the carrier that are located near the carry handle, and the shoulder belt routes behind the carrier through the guide located above the carrier release from base handle. Reference the Mesa V2 manual and vehicle manual for seat belt installation guidance.

No, UPPAbaby does not allow vehicle seat protectors with their car seats because they haven't been tested or approved for use. The car seat base has a finished bottom to prevent vehicle seat damage.
There is a belt path feature added to the back of the Mesa V2 carrier. During carrier-only installation, the shoulder belt can be wrapped around the back of the carrier for a more secure install to the vehicle seat. In the event of a collision, this type of installation helps decrease the force on a baby’s shoulders and neck by limiting a downward motion in a frontal crash.

The Aria is UPPAbaby’s lightest infant car seat and sets new standards weighing just under 6lbs. The extra-large UPF 50+ hideaway canopy with back panel ventilation and pop out extended sunshade intuitively provides additional airflow and sun protection when needed, and can be simply pushed back when not.
UPPAbaby recommends transitioning your child out the Mesa V2 by their first birthday or the 1-inch rule, whichever comes first. The 1-inch rule is applied when your child is using the headrest in its highest position and when the top of their head is less than 1-inch from the top of the headrest structure. Please note that transition should also occur when your child meets the 35 lb weight limit.
